How the scoring works
This validator scores three things that matter most for an early-stage app idea, each with its own weight. Each one is scored on its own. That way you can see where your idea is strong and where it needs work.
Market demand (40% weight) weighs audience size against the field you are up against. Some rivals prove the demand is real. An empty market may just mean no one has tested it yet.
Build feasibility (25% weight) asks how hard the idea is to build. A simple idea scores higher, because it reaches users faster and can be shaped by real feedback.
Monetization potential (35% weight) weighs your chosen revenue model against the audience you are aiming at. A subscription model with a medium or large audience scores highest. An ad-based model with a small audience scores lowest.
What makes a strong app idea?
Clear target audience
The best ideas solve a specific problem for a defined group of people. "Everyone" is not a target audience.
Validated demand
Some competition is healthy. It proves people care enough to pay for a fix. Find the gap your rivals are missing.
Achievable scope
Start small. The most successful apps launched with one core feature done well, not ten features done poorly.
Clear path to revenue
Know how you'll make money before writing a single line of code. Free apps still need a monetization strategy.
Common scoring patterns
| Idea type | Typical score | Key risk |
|---|---|---|
| SaaS with subscription | 65 – 85 | Build complexity |
| Marketplace / platform | 55 – 75 | Chicken-and-egg problem |
| Social / content app | 40 – 60 | Monetization clarity |
| AI / ML-powered tool | 45 – 70 | Technical complexity |
| Simple utility app | 50 – 75 | Differentiation |
Frequently asked questions
- How does the app idea validator score my idea?
- The validator scores your idea across three weighted dimensions: market demand (40%), build feasibility (25%), and monetization potential (35%). Each dimension uses your answers about audience size, competition, technical complexity, and revenue model to produce a score from 0-100.
- Is this app idea validator accurate?
- The validator provides a directional assessment based on common startup success factors. It's designed to surface blind spots and prompt critical thinking - not to predict success or failure. Use it as a starting point for deeper validation with real customers.
- What score means my app idea is worth building?
- Ideas scoring 75+ (Strong) have solid fundamentals across all dimensions. Ideas scoring 55-74 (Promising) are worth pursuing but have areas to strengthen. Below 55, consider refining your approach before investing heavily in development.
- Can I validate my idea without building anything?
- Yes. This tool is a quick first-pass assessment. For deeper validation without code, run customer discovery interviews, create a landing page to test demand, pre-sell to early adopters, or build a clickable prototype. Our team can help you design a validation strategy before committing to a full build.
- How is this different from other idea validators?
- Most idea validators give a generic pass/fail. Ours scores three specific dimensions independently, explains why each scored that way, and gives you actionable next steps tailored to your idea's specific strengths and weaknesses. It's built by engineers who have shipped hundreds of MVPs.
What makes a good app idea?
A strong app idea needs three things at once. A painful problem, one people already hunt for a fix to. An audience you can reach and market to. And a business model that works, where they pay enough to keep the business going. Most failed apps nail one of the three and miss the other two.
The validation hierarchy
- Problem validation - Do people actually have this problem? (Talk to 15–20 potential users)
- Solution validation - Does your proposed solution address the problem? (Show mockups or prototypes)
- Willingness to pay - Will they pay for it? (Pre-sell or collect deposits)
- Market size - Are there enough potential customers to build a business?
Common validation mistakes
Asking friends and family: They'll say yes to be supportive. Talk to strangers who have the problem.
Building before validating: A landing page test costs $300. An MVP costs $15K+. Validate first.
Confusing interest with demand: "That's a cool idea" is not validation. "I'd pay $X/month for that" is closer. An actual deposit is real validation.
